Why Are Intimate Relationships So Difficult Today?

    Interventions for Couples Therapy

with Dr. Sara Schwarzbaum, EdD, LMFT, LCPC

    Course Description:

Why are intimate relationships so difficult today?

Most couples start out highly satisfied with their relationship but as time goes by, disagreements appear, initiating a downward spiral from which they often struggle to recover. Individuals often get disheartened about their relationship, losing commitment to working thing out, and may seek the help of counselors for guidance. Traditional couples therapy interventions often are not enough to safeguard the couple and more is needed.

This presentation focuses on the cultural underpinnings of relationships distress, including a description of anti-relational forces plaguing the culture, challenges with creating an equal relationship, and economic stress and time famine. Additionally, there are societal myths about how relationships should be that can be harmful to the long-term stability of a couple. Finally, individual therapy can and often does, destabilize a relationship.

The presentation will include sample interventions for couples that may help create a buffer around the relationship.

    Learning objectives:

    The audience will

    a. Understand the cultural underpinnings of relationship distress

    b. Understand societal myths that affect relationship stability

    c. Increase awareness regarding how individual therapy can destabilize a relationship.

    d. Learn interventions addressing above issues that can be used in sessions with couples
